The sexual abuse of men and boys challenges the paradigm through which our society views sexual abuse: male perpetrator against female victim. As a result of this confusion, as well as issues of masculinity and sexual orientation, most male victims of non-consensual sex remain silent about their victimization for years, decades, even the rest of their lives. This silence perpetuates the misunderstandings about male victims and leads to an astonishing underestimation of the prevalence of sexual abuse of men and boys. The trauma of the abuse, coupled with a near-total lack of support, shame and isolation contribute to an alarming incidence of substance abuse in the male survivor community. Most studies reflect a substance abuse rate of 75% to 80% in the survivor community. In this presentation, we will explore the prevalence of sexual abuse of males, the common effects Including substance abuse, how to make a thorough assessment and a roadmap for treatment and healing. Course meets the qualifications for 3 hours of continuing education credit for MFTs, LPCCs, LEPs and/or LCSWs as required by the California Board of Behavioral Sciences. CE Provider #PCE5831.
