This year’s theme Social Work: Generations Strong highlights the fact that social workers have been working for generations to improve the lives of every single American. Social work is also a profession that allows people across many generations to make a profound, positive impact on the lives of millions of people each and every day. Kane Smego, keynote speaker is a spoken word and hip-hop artist, a National Poetry Slam finalist, and co-founder of the youth arts and education nonprofit Sacrificial Poets. He also is an international touring artist, performing and teaching across the United States and in Europe, Africa, Central and South America, the Middle East, and Southeast Asia. He is the primary author of the YouTh ink. Curriculum that uses poetry and hip hop to help youth and adults tell their own stories and challenges them to transform themselves and their communities using the spoken and written word. Mr. Smego has spoken at the 2019 NASW National Conference and at the 2019 NASW CA Annual Leadership Conference in June. Kane takes listeners on a journey exploring the role that our layered identities, experiences, and stories play in leadership, relationships building, and community engagement.
