Social Workers are an essential force at the forefront of the response to the COVID-19 pandemic and for years to come, we will continue to be tasked with the enormous challenge of meeting the needs of communities devastated by psychic trauma, health complications, and economic injury. Social inequalities and institutional oppression mean that many of the people we serve will face an unequal recovery. As we think about how to meet these needs, we must also ask how these social, political, and economic realities impact the mental health of Social Workers. Beyond a conversation about self-care and compassion fatigue, we must begin to mobilize, organize our efforts, and strategize towards community care and professional care models that can support our own mental health. This mental health awareness month, please join us for a brainstorming workshop about the intersection of post-pandemic macro realities and the mental health of our individual selves and our profession. We will acknowledge our unique and essential position in our society and the burden of that responsibility, while looking towards models of care that can help prevent burnout.
